Chattock often painted rural scenes and architectural subjects. Inhe completed his most famous works, sixteen etchings that depict the industrial landscape of the Black Country considered an unusual choice for artists. Foreign each etching, Chattock gave a description of what is being portrayed, and often how the objects in the etchings were used in the industry.

While these descriptions tell of the "intense desolation" of the Black Country, due to an industry that "ransacked depths", Chattock is often focused on what he calls "single picturesqueness, if not beauty". In this regard he was a frequent contributor to such publications as The Portfolio and The Etcher. He was also the author of Practical Notes on Etchingfirst published in Chattock was a full member of the Royal Engravers. Many of Richard Chattock's best etchings were printed in sets. Among these are Views in Wesleydale and Sketches of Eton Eton College from the River was first published for the last named series.

Seven years later P. Hamerton requested the plate for publication in Etching and Etchers. Hamerton's, Etching and Etchers : The writings of Philip Gilbert Hamerton did more to restore the art of etching as an original and major art medium than any other nineteenth century author. His first book, The Painter's Camp, was published in He also served as the editor of The Portfolioa major arts publication dealing extensively with the art of etching.

Of his many books the most influential was Etching and Etchers which introduced both artists and collectors to the many creative and technical aspects of the medium. The first edition was published in and included original etchings by Jongkind, Haden and Palmer as richard samuel chattock biography as late printings of seventeenth century Dutch masters.

A second edition followed inbut without any original etchings. The third edition from which this original etching hails was published in a large paper edition limited to one thousand copies. In total over twenty original etchings were printed for this important portfolio. It should finally be noted that Hamerton was meticulous in his inclusion of plates for this edition.
