Abourezk also mounted an unsuccessful effort against natural gas de-regulation that raised prices for consumers and became an outspoken critic of U. Abourezk served four years in the U. Navy following World War II. He worked a series of jobs, including as a rancher, blackjack dealer and judo instructor, and then earned a degree in civil engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines. His job as a civil engineer took him to California, then back to South Dakota, where he worked on the Minuteman missile silos in the western part of the state.
His vision in founding the ADC served not only to protect the Arab American, but also to empower the generations that followed. He was tenacious for the truth, and merciful to the underpriviledged, whether they were Native Americans or Palestinian refugees. He was proud of his Lebanese roots as he was of his upbringing in South Dakota.
He took up consumer, labor, and family farmer causes as a matter of duty. With knowledge and intuition, he rose to the occasion, often with his close collaborator, Senator Howard Metzenbaum D-OHto challenge big business lobbies. Senator Abourezk was the embodiment of an honest and outstanding public servant. As a seeker of activism early on, when most Arab Americans felt they lacked representation, Abourezk sought to empower his colleagues and those under subjugation.

Although it turned out that the hostages were not really being held against their will—they all lived in Wounded Knee—Jim then got agreement from militant leader Russell Means that the confrontation would end on condition that the U. It went on for 71 more days. He has written and published two books, now out of print, plus dozens of articles on a variety of subjects.
Jim also led a delegation of South Dakotans along with a combination of basketball teams from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and the State University in Brookings to Havana, Cuba, to play against the Cuban National basketball team. The Cuban team then returned to South Dakota to play our teams here. Jim also led a number of South Dakotans on tours of the Middle East where his groups met with various leaders of Arab countries, helping to create understanding of the different cultures.
Following his term in the U. Senate, Jim eventually returned to South Dakota to resume his law practice.
